Squidward in the Nowhere dimension from its debut episode, SB-129.

The "Nowhere dimension" is a location which debuted in the Season 1 episode "SB-129". Its key discoverer was Squidward Tentacles, who journeyed there by accident after breaking a key component in his time machine during the events of "SB-129". The dimension's exact location in space and time is unknown; however, it can be derived that its place in the space-time continuum is abnormal compared to other places in reality. The realm was coined "Nowhere" by Squidward during his ending dialogue in "SB-129":

“Oh, I'm back! I-I can't believe this. I...I..I was in space, and I went to the future and, and then I went to the past, and, and then, then I was nowhere, but now I'm back and, and...you don't know how happy I am to see you guys.”
Squidward

The dimension also appears in the Season 6 episode "Truth or Square" and in the SpongeBob's Game Frenzy iOS app.

Description

The dimension consists of a blank, endless void, which has virtually no end or means of escape. The land's only known inhabitants are several colored panels, when once lifted, drift away into nothingness, and disembodied voices, which make strange sounds and seem to mimic what they hear around them. Footsteps and ambient sounds also seem to be amplified within the dimension; the Nowhere Voices seem to grow louder the longer they repeat a certain word.

Role in series

SB-129

The dimension's first and most prominent appearance is in "SB-129", where Squidward journeys to it after breaking off the lever to his time machine, which controlled whether he went to the past or to the future; rather than exiting the machine to enter Nowhere, he inexplicably appeared there after the time machine went through a vortex. Once there, he initially reveled in the solace the dimension provided, remarking how he "may finally have found a place where I can be all...alone". Soon after, the word "alone" is repeated by the Nowhere voices, deeply unnerving him and causing him to seek a means of escape from the dimension. Finding none (as he loops back to the same place he started), he panics, stomping vigorously on its floor until he unintentionally crashes through it, finding himself in the time machine; it was somehow resting underneath the realm the entire time. Through it, he returns home; he mentions the dimension as "Nowhere" when recounting his adventures to SpongeBob and Patrick.

Truth or Square

A framed animation cell of the dimension can be seen in "Truth or Square" on the wall of Nickelodeon Animation Studio as Patchy the Pirate calls various celebrities.

Role in games

SpongeBob's Game Frenzy

It is the location of one of the mini-games.

Trivia

  • In the background, there are pink and yellow colored panels, meant to resemble Patrick and SpongeBob. This means that no matter where in time and space Squidward travel to, the two will always be there.
  • Strangely enough, Nowhere provides a breathable atmosphere for Squidward, even though like other sea creatures, he requires water to survive. Nowhere does not seem to have any source of water.
  • An animation error is present during the scene where Squidward arrives in Nowhere; when Squidward lifts a cyan-colored panel, it floats away and disappears, but reappears on the floor when the camera changes. It is also a different shade of cyan than when it first appeared.
