Stephen Hillenburg (August 21, 1961 – November 26, 2018) was a marine biologist educator and an animator. He is best remembered as being the creator of the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise. Prior to his work with SpongeBob, Stephen Hillenburg was involved with Rocko's Modern Life.
In 2017, Hillenburg was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which he died of a year later.
