The movie was long planned with Nickelodeon and Paramount Pictures telling Stephen Hillenburg about the idea [1]. However Hillenburg would reject this idea for more than idea, thinking about the challenge with putting SpongeBob and Patrick in a cinematically-consequential and inspiring without losing what he called the SpongeBob "cadence".
