“Everybody's gone! But I swear that I will keep the memory of Bikini Bottom alive, by living out their lives for them.”
SpongeBob

"Gone" is the second segment of the fourth episode of season 6, and it is paired with "Not Normal." In this episode, SpongeBob wakes up to find that he is the only citizen left at Bikini Bottom.

Characters

Plot

SpongeBob wakes up and goes into the kitchen to fill Gary's food bowl. However, when he calls him, Gary doesn't come, and when he looks for him, he can't find him and assumes he got an early start. He goes to the Krusty Krab, but doesn't realize Mr. Krabs and Squidward aren't there.

When he comes back home, he sees that Gary has still not eaten his food yet and also realizes everyone in town is gone. He promises to live out everyone's lives for them to keep the memory of Bikini Bottom, so the next day, he imitates the other characters interacting with himself.

However, he gets upset when trying to imitate Mrs. Puff as he can't, but realizes with her not there, he can make a license for himself and takes a boat home with him. He starts living his regular life with the boat and calls him Boaty, but at some point, the boat suspects that SpongeBob has made a puppet of his old best friend.

He walks into his closet and discusses with a meat puppet of Patrick, but when they realize Boaty is watching, SpongeBob gets out. Three days later, he is writing in his diary to run for it when the coast is clear. When he gets out of the plant he's hiding in, he encounters Boaty and runs away, only to constantly end up at boat-related areas.

He gets out an axe from the cinema after he gets out of a racing movie's theater, and strikes a bus which all the citizens of Bikini Bottom pile out of. It turns out they were celebrating National No SpongeBob Day for a couple of days, and after SpongeBob learns and appreciates the day, they go out to celebrate National No Patrick Day.

Notes

Cultural references

  • Mr. Krabs recalling burning down an effigy of SpongeBob is a reference to the Burning Man.

Trivia

  • This episode premiered as a part of the Gimme 5 marathon.
  • According to a calendar seen in Mrs. Puff's Boating School, this episode takes place in October.
  • This is the second episode where SpongeBob impersonates Mr. Krabs, the first being "Shell of a Man."

When SpongeBob looks for Squidward in his house, Squidward's 483 self-portraits from the sister episode, "Not Normal," can be seen.

  • SpongeBob is able to walk right into the Krusty Krab in the morning without Mr. Krabs unlocking the door. However, in episodes such as "Employee of the Month," "The Lost Mattress," and "Once Bitten," Krabs is shown to have to unlock the door with a key so the employees can go inside.
  • This was the first episode for a few things:
    • The first episode in which SpongeBob imitates Sandy.
    • The first episode where SpongeBob imitates Mr. Krabs.
    • The first episode to play the track "Alone In The Old House."
  • This was the last episode for two things:
    • The last episode to have Spongicus storyboard panels from bonus features.
    • The last episode to use the track "Sixties Happy Times" until the season 10 episode, "Plankton's Retires."
  • This was the second episode to feature Mrs. Puff's Boating School without Mrs. Puff.
  • Irony: SpongeBob could have put Boaty in his garage.
  • The Sun Block label in this episode reads "SPF" on it. The said initials stand for "Sun Protection Factor."
  • The time card "Three Days Later" in this episode used a similar background to the title card of "Good Neighbors" and the "Several Days Later" time card in "Mrs. Puff, You're Fired."
  • At the end of this episode, Patrick is seen holding three balloons that depict his three main colors: pink for his skin, green for his shorts, and purple for the flowers on his shorts.
  • In the Indonesian dub, most of the scenes starting from SpongeBob making his own driver license until working at Krusty Krab with Boaty were all skipped to where SpongeBob and Boaty returning home from Krusty Krab. This was most likely done due to time constraints.
  • This is one of few episodes where no main characters other than SpongeBob play a significant role. SpongeBob is the only main character, not counting the ones he impersonates, who appears up until the end.
    • SpongeBob's ability to impersonate other characters would later become a main plot point in the season 10 episode, "Mimic Madness."
  • It is revealed that Patrick finds SpongeBob's laugh annoying.
    • However, he does not seem to mind it in other episodes.
  • Gary, Plankton, Pearl, and Karen are the only major characters SpongeBob did not impersonate.
  • This is one of few episodes. However, in a flashback, Sandy appears but doesn't have any lines, though she is seen celebrating National No SpongeBob Day.
    • Not counting SpongeBob imitates Squidward, this is one of few episodes where Squidward appears but doesn't have any lines, though he goes on a trip with everyone in Bikini Bottom to get away from SpongeBob.
      • Irony it was also the second of three episodes where Sandy and Squidward appear, but do not speak.
  • Gary is mentioned, although he does not appear in the episode.
  • The way SpongeBob keeps repeating "go" to make it sound like an echo is similar to how Patrick repeats the word "road" for the same reason in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.
  • The characters whom SpongeBob impersonates include:
    • Squidward
    • Patrick
    • Sandy
    • Eugene
    • Mrs. Puff
    • Old Man Jenkins
  • When SpongeBob impersonates Squidward at the Krusty Krab, he uses a Kelpo box with four plungers for his arms and legs for himself in the kitchen.
  • When SpongeBob asks his imitation of Mrs. Puff that the first thing to do when driving a boat is floor it, his line is a reference to "Boating School," where SpongeBob floors it in that episode as the thing to do after starting the boat.
  • When SpongeBob was being Mr. Krabs, Spongebob's said, "Can I have a raise?" and Mr. Krabs (a.k.a SpongeBob) said, "No," it's similar from the episode "Krusty Krab Training Video" when "Interfacing With Your Boss".
  • On SpongeBob's driver's license, it says that his hair color is yellow and that he only weighs one ounce.
  • The photo on SpongeBob's driver's license looks similar to his Kenny the Cat Fan Club membership card from "Kenny the Cat."
