According to Marc Ceccarelli, the writers of The Patrick Star show wanted to have more freedom In the show than in Spongebob, saying "We really tried to just do anything we wanted... We mess with canon a lot. I don't know if anybody knows this, but we don't really respect canon just for the sake of itself.".[3] The writers also wanted to sideline story structure, which helps them be more bizarre with the things they do.[3]

Reception[edit]
The announcement of the show would receive heavy backlash from fans and former staff including Paul Tibbitt who previously has expressed that he didn't want the show to derive from the main series[8]. On Common Sense Media, Marty Brown gave the series 4 out of 5 stars, praising it for the show setting itself apart from the original show along with the fast pacing and disregard for linear plot structure, he says that "The furiously kinetic series is just a relentless series of jokes and sight gags, with little regard for things like plot or continuity. In other words, it's a lot of fun, especially for folks who are already fans of the original series[9]. Similarly Brandon Zachary of Comic Book Resources would praise the show's less restrained and madcap energy comparing the show to Pee-wee's Playhouse, he would also praise Jill Talley for her voice performance as Squidina saying "earnest attitude helps paper over some of the more unwieldy elements of such a purposefully unstructured series."[10].
Additionally, Something Stupid This Way Comes, one of the episodes from the show, has been nominated for the Annie Awards in the "Outstanding Achievement for Character Animation in an Animated Television / Broadcast Production" category. Although it would be beat by In the Know, Dream Productions, and Arcane.[11]
