The French Narrator introduces the underwater town of Bikini Bottom, highlighting a particular resident: SpongeBob SquarePants, whom he considers to be his favorite aquatic creature.

SpongeBob eagerly prepares to apply as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab; however, his confidence wanes once he arrives at the restaurant. Initially set to leave on the preconceived notion that he is not good enough, SpongeBob is quickly dissuaded by his best friend, Patrick Star, who rouses him with SpongeBob's qualifications and passion for fry cooking. With his enthusiasm restored, SpongeBob enters the restaurant for his job application, much to the chagrin of his neighbor and the Krusty Krab's cashier, Squidward Tentacles. Not believing him to be qualified for the position, the Krusty Krab's owner, Mr. Krabs, concocts a test for SpongeBob, involving him obtaining a fictional high-caliber hydrodynamic spatula. When he leaves after accepting his task, Squidward and Mr. Krabs laugh at SpongeBob's expense.

Soon after, anchovies in busloads arrive at the Krusty Krab, overrunning the establishment despite the two's desperate attempts at maintaining order. As SpongeBob shops at the Barg'N-Mart for the requested spatula, the situation at the Krusty Krab descends into total chaos, with Squidward and Mr. Krabs accepting their demise at the anchovies' hands. SpongeBob suddenly returns, demonstrating the existence of the nonfictional hydro-dynamic spatula before serving the anchovies a plethora of Krabby Patties. Once they depart, an impressed Mr. Krabs awards SpongeBob the position of fry cook to Squidward's dismay; Patrick soon arrives with an order of one Krabby Patty, causing SpongeBob to go into a cooking overdrive. Squidward calls for Mr. Krabs, mockingly asking him to "see your new employee."

Plot
Help Wanted opens with a wide shot of Bikini Bottom, as we pan to SpongeBob’s house. The French Narrator introduces us to SquarePants and the city of Bikini Bottom. We cut to SpongeBob’s bedroom, where SpongeBob’s alarm blares to wake him up.

SpongeBob turns off the alarm, and tells Gary the Snail excitedly that today’s the big day, leaping into a pair of his trademark square pants as he runs off to his gym, telling Gary that he wants to be at his peak physical condition for today’s events. He then struggles at lifting weights, before setting them down.
]]
He runs out of his pineapple house to the Krusty Krab, passing by his best friend Patrick Star, who cheers him on. Patrick then falls off his rock. We then see SpongeBob near the Krusty Krab, Bikini Bottom’s prime eating establishment. SpongeBob admires the restaurant and tells of his goal to work there, before quickly losing confidence.

SpongeBob attempts to run off before being suddenly stopped by Patrick. He gives SpongeBob a confidence boost, by reminding SpongeBob of his passionate love for fry cooking. SpongeBob is then given the strength he needs. He runs up to the Krusty Krab.

Squidward Tentacles is seen cleaning up the window, and notices SpongeBob approaching fast. Noticing the help wanted sign, he rushes to tell Eugene H. Krabs about SpongeBob, but SpongeBob enters the restaurant, tripping and falling.

After bouncing around the restaurant and coming to a dead stop, he asks Mr. Krabs for a job. Mr. Krabs and Squidward decide to give SpongeBob a test, which involves SpongeBob obtaining a hydrodynamic spatula with port and starboard attachments, as well as a turbo drive. SpongeBob accepts this task. Mr. Krabs and Squidward laugh as they relish in the fact SpongeBob is gone.
Production Cells/Model Sheets
Anchovies in busloads proceed to pull up to the Krusty Krab, which Mr. Krabs detects near instantly, describing it as a smelly smell that smells smelly. The anchovies quickly overrun the Krusty Krab, with Squidward trying to maintain order, but failing miserably.
Artwork/Storyboards
SpongeBob arrives at the Barg N Mart as chaos unfolds at the Krusty Krab. Mr. Krabs panics and asks for his mom as SpongeBob looks for the spatula. As Mr. Krabs and Squidward obtain higher ground, they accept their doomed fate, before SpongeBob returns with the requested spatula.
Critical Reception
Squidward and Mr. Krabs are in utter disbelief as SpongeBob shows off the spatula, flying into the kitchen as “Living in the Sunlight” plays in the background. SpongeBob then prepares a bunch of Krabby Patties to the tune of the song. The anchovies are fed as SpongeBob keeps up the pace.
Releases
Eventually, SpongeBob feeds the last anchovy as they all leave the Krusty Krab. Mr. Krabs is impressed with SpongeBob’s talent as he is hired on the spot. Mr. Krabs retreats to his office with an impressive amount of cash. Patrick enters and orders a Krabby Patty, which causes SpongeBob to create a torrent of Krabby Patties. “Living in the Sunlight” starts back up as Squidward calls for Mr. Krabs, ending the episode.

Animation style
*It is the only episode where SpongeBob's bed is on the right side of his room.
Because it is the first episode, "Help Wanted" has many differences to the rest of the series. However, the original version of the episode had many other minor differences corrected later. For example, this is the only episode where SpongeBob's bed is on the right. Differences in voices are another example. SpongeBob's voice is slightly lower and Patrick's is deeper. Designs and colors are also different. Mr. Krabs' eyelids are bright pink opposed to just red, Squidward wears a regular orange shirt instead of brown-orange, his complexion is more pale, his laugh is different, the comedic "splat" sound is different, and Gary's eye pupils & irises are smaller with a lower tone of voice in the "meow" (although Tom Kenny claims to use a new "meow" for each episode where Gary is shown meowing). Squidward also appears to have rows of sticks behind his house. In addition, the Animation wasn't as high quality unlike the following episodes, as the rapid movement made by SpongeBob when he was bouncing off the walls, roof, and floor of the Krusty Krab showed just a yellow square. When the anchovies were jumping up and down they were just blue and brown (mostly blue) finger-shaped ovals. Differences in SpongeBob's house are also present in this episode, but not other, such as there is only one window in front. SpongeBob's alarm clock has a different ship horn sound than his alarm clock in later episodes. Also, SpongeBob has a pet Scallop that he kept in a bird cage in his room. The changes were made when the series officially aired.

SpongeBob

"Help Wanted" is the first segment of the pilot episode of the SpongeBob SquarePants series. It first aired on Nickelodeon in the United States on May 1, 1999, following the televised broadcast of the 1999 Kid's Choice Awards. It centers on the titular character SpongeBob SquarePants, who applies as the fry cook of the popular fast-food restaurant, the Krusty Krab. The segment was paired with "Reef Blower" and "Tea at the Treedome" in its first airing.

The show was first conceived by marine biologist Stephen Hillenburg in 1994, although work did not begin on developing it until after the cancellation of Nickelodeon's Rocko's Modern life, on which Hillenburg was the show's creative director. Most of Rocko's staff emigrated to SpongeBob SquarePants, including Tom Kenny and Mr. Lawrence, who ended up voicing SpongeBob SquarePants and Plankton, respectively. Inspired by the 1989 film Powwow Highway, Hillenburg initially conceived the series pitch around SpongeBob and Squidward Tentacles going on a road trip; this concept was scrapped, though it would be reused for the first segment of the fifth episode of Season 1, "Pizza Delivery". Instead, Hillenburg and SpongeBob's show writer, Derek Drymon, based "Help Wanted"'s realized plot off an experience Hillenburg had during his Boy Scout years.

Despite being completed in 1997, the pilot would not air until 1999, during which the pilot was slightly altered into its final form. During its broadcast, "Help Wanted" was viewed in over 2,000,000 households and received positive critical reviews, effectively launching the franchise and kickstarting the global phenomenon that would be SpongeBob SquarePants. In addition, the episode also resuscitated popularity for its featured Tiny Tim cover, "Livin' in the Sunlight, Lovin' in the Moonlight".

Plot

SpongeBob uses his hydro-dynamic spatula to hover over the ravenous anchovies.
