"What Ever Happened to SpongeBob?" is the eighteenth episode of season 5. In this episode, SpongeBob runs out of town after messing everyone's day, but ends up getting amnesia and becomes stranded in New Kelp City.

Plot[edit]
SpongeBob wakes up and praises what a great life he has, but when he hugs Gary, he accidentally breaks his shell. He gets angry at him and drives him out of the house, running until he bumps into Patrick. He gets mad as he caused his birthday cake for his mother to get destroyed, and calls him idiot boy.
He goes to Squidward house next, only for him to get angry as he disturbed his beauty sleep. Later, he goes to Sandy's treedome, where she has made a robot. However, he trips on a log and spills the water from his water helmet, destroying the robot and making Sandy kick him out.
He goes to the Krusty Krab, where he slips on a puddle of water while working. Mr. Krabs notices and goes into the kitchen, only to bump into SpongeBob and fly into the fryer, where his money disintegrates. He kicks SpongeBob out and tells him to get as far away from him as possible. He cries as he goes home and packs up his things, while giving Gary a year's supply of snail food.
He leaves Bikini Bottom, and at night, he is scared by a bunch of weird fish and falls down a cliff, and becomes unconscious after his hobo stick hits him in the head. Meanwhile, Patrick and Sandy enter SpongeBob's house and find a letter stating he has left town. SpongeBob wakes up to see two strangers organizing his clothes.
He doesn't remember his name, despite his nametag, so they say his name is CheeseHead BrownPants. He takes out his bubbles and starts playing with them, making the strangers run away. SpongeBob then explores New Kelp City, while Bikini Bottom is a wreck as SpongeBob is not making patties. Everyone except Squidward gets upset that he is gone and try to come up with a plan to find SpongeBob.
SpongeBob finds out he's jobless and tries to get a job, only to get fired when he utilizes bubbles. Meanwhile, Sandy creates a device to track sponges, only for it to get destroyed by Squidward. Mr. Krabs forces him to find SpongeBob himself because of this, and says he'll reward him with a handcrafted jewel-encrusted ornamental egg if he brings him back. SpongeBob seeks warmth, and blows a bubble to steady his nerves, only to scare the nearby citizens. Soon after, the Bubble Poppin' Boys confront him and say bubble-blowing is banned from the city. They chase him through town while SpongeBob uses bubbles to get away from them. Eventually, he traps them in a big bubble and they float away.
The citizens congratulate him for doing this as they can now blow bubbles freely and gets appointed to mayor of New Kelp City. At the same time, Sandy and the others try to find SpongeBob, when they find out he became mayor of New Kelp. They go over there while SpongeBob's giving a speech. They try to convince him to come back, but find out he lost his memory. Squidward acquires a limo and they drive SpongeBob back to the Krusty Krab.
He doesn't recognize the place and says he needs to go back to New Kelp. Mr. Krabs gives Squidward his egg, but slips as he heads out and drops the egg on SpongeBob. He now remembers the Krusty Krab, but still wants to go to New Kelp to be their mayor. However, after finding out that the city has gone downhill because of him allowing bubbles, he ends up staying at Bikini Bottom, making everyone happy, except Squidward.
