SpongeBob Saves the Day is an online point-and-click game in which SpongeBob tries to help Mr. Krabs, Patrick, Squidward, and Sandy have their "Best Day Ever." It was developed by Seven2 and published by Nickelodeon.

Gameplay[edit]

SpongeBob shows Gary that he is celebrating his Best Day Ever, and Gary suggests that he start with Patrick. When SpongeBob visits Patrick, he must open up Patrick's rock and collect the Krabby Patty inside. Next, he must change Junior's diaper by collecting a clean diaper off the head of a Jellien in Jellyfish Fields. He can then put the clean diaper in the trash, driving away jellyfish and letting him collect jellyfish jelly. SpongeBob must put the jelly on the Krabby Patty and feed it to Patrick. Patrick is satisfied after a trophy is delivered to him, unlocking the rest of the areas.

The game branches out into multiple paths, where SpongeBob can go to any area he wants. At Squidward's house, SpongeBob must help Squidward find his clarinet. A banana can be found behind the pink pillow, and a food dish is sitting on a shelf. SpongeBob can break a vase by playing the TV, which reveals the Volcano Sauce. SpongeBob can enter Squidward's gallery and flip three paintings right-side up, and then talk to Patrick Not-Star. In Squidward's backyard, SpongeBob must feed Bunny Wunny the food after covering it in Volcano Sauce, driving him away from the garden and dropping a clarinet reed.

At Sandy's treedome, SpongeBob must equip a water helmet from outside before he can enter. Items here include a ray gun behind a karate glove, Anchor Arms hanging on an exercise machine, a jar with a head and flea collar inside, and a shrinking potion. SpongeBob has to open the jar by first equipping the Anchor Arms, and then can give it to Sandy. To demonstrate her robot, SpongeBob must fix it with the ray gun and give a banana to the robot. This impresses Dr. Marmalade, Lord Reginald, and Professor Percy, SpongeBob gets ice cream, and Sandy is happy.

Next, SpongeBob must visit the Krusty Krab. Mrs. Puff has lost her boat keys, and after SpongeBob finds them under a table, he can return them to her. Mrs. Puff leaves and her chair tips over, revealing a hydro-dynamic spatula. Inside the kitchen, Pearl is crying over not being good at cooking patties, and needs a special spatula. SpongeBob has to open a door, revealing a giant Krabby Patty, and shrink it with the potion to reveal the port and starboard attachments, then combine them with the spatula and give it to Pearl. A Chum Bucket helmet rolls in, and SpongeBob must go outside. Plankton and Karen are outside with a tape of a Krusty Krab commercial. After collecting Bold and Brash, SpongeBob has to give Plankton the bucket helmet, electrocuting him and causing Karen to retreat and drop the tape. After SpongeBob gives Mr. Krabs the tape, he is satisfied and gives SpongeBob a broken spatula.

Finally, SpongeBob must return to Squidward's house and add Bold and Brash to Squidward's collection. Patrick Not-Star leaves, having seen the full collection of Squidward's art, and SpongeBob can open a safe behind a painting. It contains the clarinet, which SpongeBob can combine with the reed and give to Squidward, who rewards him with a clarinet record.

With all his friends happy, they throw a party for SpongeBob at his house. SpongeBob notices the Gary is missing. First, SpongeBob must put Squidward's record on a record player, and use Mr. Krabs's broken spatula as a handle. This reveals Gary's food bowl, and SpongeBob has to combine Sandy's ice cream and Patrick's cookie to make an ice cream sandwich, then put it in the bowl. Gary, who had been trapped behind the wallpaper, is freed and SpongeBob celebrates while telling the player how long they took to complete the game.

In the game's strings.xml file, there are multiple dialogue tags that are empty: DinersDialogue, MarbleDialogue, SandyWheelDialogue, GardenDialogue, BubbleBuddyDialogue, ArmsHangingDialogue, BookshelfDialogue, BookshelfFrontDialogue, DollDialogue, WormJarDialogue, PillowDialogue, BucketDialogue, HouseDialogue, RocketDialogue, ShelfDialogue, and StatueDialogue. Most of these correspond to used objects in the game, hinting that they would have had dialogue for being clicked on.

In the files for the area outside Sandy's house, a graphic of Sandy's suit being ripped up on the ground is present. An employee at Seven2, the company that developed SpongeBob Saves the Day, confirmed that this was intended as a hint for SpongeBob needing to find a helmet to go inside the treedome.[1]

YUM, a sprite of a 3D human head with realistic eyes, ears, and mouth can be found in the graphics for the Krusty Krab's dining room. Its filenames are "t_tmpYummer" and "t_tmpYummer2," and its hands have separate graphics. On May 23rd, this graphic was found, and YouTuber "oddheader" investigated. Contact info for a Seven2 dev was found, and on June 3rd, oddheader posted the intent behind the sprite on Twitter. Named "YUM," it originated from a 3D model test, and was used in the company as a placeholder graphic to indicate what still needed to be finished. As SpongeBob Saves the Day was made to celebrate the show's 20th anniversary, they wanted to have a familiar character popping out from behind a support beam in the Krusty Krab and used YUM as a placeholder. This idea was scrapped, and YUM remains in the files.[2]

Errors[edit]

  • During the party scene, SpongeBob will continue to give the player hints about looking at the checklist, despite it not being available at the moment.
  • At Patrick's house, SpongeBob may give the hint "Maybe I can check Jellyfish fields?" Jellyfish Fields is improperly capitalized.
  • When SpongeBob enters the party, his line "It's so dark! Who turned out the lights Gary?" is missing a comma.
  • SpongeBob's comment after hearing the record, "Oh Boy! This sure sounds...like Squidward" has the word "boy" incorrectly capitalized.
  • SpongeBob's line "I'll help you find your video tape Mr. Krabs!" is missing a comma.
  • Plankton says, "Nice try, Squarepants!" "SquarePants" is improperly capitalized.
  • After getting the Anchor Arms, SpongeBob says, "These make any square as strong as a Larry the Lobster!" As Larry is a specific character, "a Larry the Lobster" is incorrect.
  • Squidward does not capitalizes SpongeBob's name correctly in the line "Not now Spongebob, I lost Clarry, my precious CLARINET."
  • Internal data refers to Mrs. Puff as "Ms. Puff."
  • Some of the filenames for characters' icons are spelled wrong: Squidward's is Squidworth, Mr. Krabs's is Krabbs, SpongeBob's is Spongebob, and the group one is called Freinds. Additionally, the Realistic Fish Head's icon is named JohnnyElaine, a fan-made name taken from Encyclopedia SpongeBobia.
