The third season of SpongeBob SquarePants began with an episode consisting of "The Algae's Always Greener" and "SpongeGuard on Duty" on March 22, 2002 and concluded with an episode consisting of "SpongeBob Meets the Strangler" and "Pranks a Lot" on October 11, 2004.

Production

Season 3 would be renewed on September 20,2000 because of high ratings of the previous seasons across cable television . Then between 1 or 2 years later the people working on the show decided to stop making episodes and work more on The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie because of production of Season 3 being complete. After production on the film was completed, Hillenburg wanted to end the show so that the series wouldn't "jump the shark", however Nickelodeon wanted to produce more episodes. later, Hillenburg would resign as the showrunner and have Paul Tibbit as showrunner. But Hillenburg would remain as executive producer on the show until 2018 due to his death.

Plankton hatches a plan to steal the Krabby Patty formula by repelling Mr. Krabs from the Krusty Krab and taking over his position. However, despite being able to run Krabs out of business, he later finds himself loyal to the customers and employees. All goes okay until Krabs returns in an attempt to take the formula away from the Krusty Krab and run Mr. Plankton out of business.

SpongeBob and Patrick are relaxing at Goo Lagoon until they see Larry exercising. But when Patrick heads to the snack bar, a flying ice cream truck lands on top of SpongeBob, who ends up being rescued by Larry and decides to work as a lifeguard. However, during the second shift, SpongeBob sees sharks in the water, so he manages to close the lagoon within an hour due to an emergency and tries to give the beachgoers free ice cream.

SpongeBob and Patrick are holding a private club, and Squidward is not allowed to join. However, as Squidward refuses to go to work, the three end up flying into Kelp Forest, where SpongeBob and Patrick come across a Magic Conch Shell. Squidward then makes food for SpongeBob, Patrick, and himself, and picnic supplies are delivered along the way.

SpongeBob's farming job is interrupted when a stray seahorse keeps eating flowers that he has been trying to plant. Much to his interest, SpongeBob luckily adopts her and names her Mystery. His times with her do not go as well, however, as Mystery has eaten every Krabby Patty for SpongeBob to cook, alongside his hat, his spatula, the stove, even Old Man Jenkins. Mr. Krabs convinces SpongeBob that Mystery is actually a wild animal, so he manages to set her free.

SpongeBob tries to convince Squidward to try a Krabby Patty, which Squidward is against because he thinks they are foul-tasting. Eventually, Squidward somehow finds himself to become a quite fond of Krabby Patties.

Flats joins Mrs. Puff's Boating School as a new student, much to SpongeBob's horror. As SpongeBob thinks he has an upset stomach, he tries to deal with Flats, who threatens to kick him from behind.

When a "health inspector" comes to the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs attempt to protect the restaurant from shutting down by inventing a smelly Krabby Patty that tastes very bad. However, after the "inspector" eats the patty, they find that the fake inspector has been caught, which they believe that Andy Yellowtail has been killed.

Squidward has received a television from the mail, and SpongeBob and Patrick play with a box that the television is contained in, known as the imagination box, where they use their imaginations. Along the way, Squidward tries to enjoy his new television, only to find that too many shows he has been trying to watch revolve around boxes.

Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy arrive at the Krusty Krab where the former purchases a double Krabby Patty and a helping of Coral Bits and inadvertently drops his secret utility belt after eating what he has ordered. When SpongeBob convinces Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy if he can have their autograph, he comes across Mermaid Man's belt, which he uses to shrink objects, even denizens of Bikini Bottom who convince SpongeBob to undo what he has done.

Mrs. Puff is falsely blamed and then arrested for a mishap that SpongeBob made during the driving exam at her Boating School, and she is, therefore, sentenced to jail. Following her complaint on her first day, Mrs. Puff realizes that she will not see SpongeBob again and begins to enjoy it. SpongeBob learns from Patrick that it is all his fault, and the two plan a jailbreak. But when SpongeBob and Patrick attempt to bust Mrs. Puff free, they learn that she has to stay, since she likes it in prison. Guest starring: Thomas F. Mr. Krabs is holding a yard sale at his house until SpongeBob purchases a soda drinking hat from him. However, several denizens of Bikini Bottom come by and offer a large sum of money each to Krabs for the hat, prompting him to get it back from SpongeBob.

After the very first television commercial for the Krusty Krab has finished production, SpongeBob ends up believing that he has become famous upon being among the cast alongside Krabs, Squidward, Pearl, and a clown.

When Mr. Krabs fires Squidward from his cash register job at the Krusty Krab for stealing his first dime, SpongeBob lets him stay at his house. After many months on trying to get a new job, Squidward heads back to the restaurant with SpongeBob, which they reveal that the dime has been in Krabs' back pocket the whole time.

When SpongeBob and Sandy head to the Salty Spitoon, Reg convinces the former to head for Weenie Hut Jr's instead. While there, the restaurant's animatronic server treats SpongeBob poorly. SpongeBob eventually learns that winning a fight is the quickest way to get in the sailor club.

Squilliam is willing to head to the Krusty Krab tonight, much to Squidward's fear. As a result, Mr. Krabs puts Squidward in charge of the restaurant, which is later transformed into a five-star restaurant.

SpongeBob believes robots are "everywhere" when Gary convinces him not to watch a scary movie about robots dominating the world, so Squidward helps SpongeBob get over his fear of robots by learning how to torture them after thinking that Mr. Krabs is a robot.

When SpongeBob and Patrick hear some chirping emanating from a lonely and helpless baby scallop without any parents who has yet to develop its flight, the two name him Junior and raise him as their baby. Days later, SpongeBob and Patrick find Junior find Junior at the edge of the window in the former's house. Following their failure to rescue him, they discover that Junior can fly, much to SpongeBob and Patrick's joy.

Mr. Krabs hires SpongeBob and Patrick to paint the inside of his house. The paint job goes well until SpongeBob and Patrick accidentally get some paint on Krabs' first dollar. SpongeBob tries to rid the paint of the dollar, only to get it completely painted, so Patrick helps SpongeBob in an attempt to get it off.

This is an instructional video for future employees at the Krusty Krab that consists of three chapters. "From Humble Beginnings" tells the story of the life of Mr. Krabs before he opened the restaurant, replacing a retirement home that closed its doors due to bankruptcy. In "The Krusty Krab Today," Mr. Krabs takes a tour of the Krusty Krab. "Training" is an important part featuring SpongeBob and Squidward following the rules that consists of the following guides: an introductory guide focusing on "POOP" (People Order Our Patties), "Personal Hygiene," a guide focusing on hygienic regulations, "Your Work Station," a guide to working at work stations, "Interfacing with your Boss," a guide to interacting with Krabs, a front lines guide focusing on a "Krustomer" (Patrick), and "Emergency Situation," an interruptive guide to dealing with emergencies such as protecting the restaurant from being robbed by a culprit (Plankton).

SpongeBob and Patrick come across a Fancy Living Digest magazine and try to look inside it, only for it to be taken by Squidward, who warns them not to steal any of his mail. Determined to become entrepreneurs, SpongeBob and Patrick decide to sell chocolate bars to Bikini Bottomites such as Tom, who gives chase.

After being treated juvenilely by Mermaid Man and the others, Barnacle Boy no longer wants to become his sidekick, so he decides to join the dark side with Man Ray and the Dirty Bubble as Barnacle Man, and the three form a rogues' gallery known as Every Villain Is Lemons (EVIL). Following his initial failure to foil Barnacle Man's plans, Mermaid Man is convinced by Mr. Krabs to gather SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, and Sandy in forming a new alliance, the International Justice League of Super Acquaintances (IJLSA). The IJLSA attempts to ruin EVIL's schemes, only to fail. However, Barnacle Man turns over a new leaf, and he and Mermaid Man become frenemies as they head to the Krusty Krab for an adult-size Krabby Patty.

Patrick becomes a new student at Mrs. Puff's Boating School, and SpongeBob tries to convince him to learn. However, Mrs. Puff falsely blames SpongeBob and removes his star from the Good Noodle Board, so he betrays Patrick after being sent to a desk that is available at the back of the room. Following a fight with each other, SpongeBob and Patrick end up being put in detention, where they turn over a new leaf and replace a burnt-out light bulb with a new one for an egg that Roger is trying to hatch from.

Mr. Krabs has finally earned his millionth dollar, so he takes SpongeBob and Squidward on a fishing trip to a dirty lagoon on an old and stinky boat, only to get his dollar eaten by a giant clam. That situation tasks the three to get Krabs' millionth dollar back.

When SpongeBob's prehistoric ancestor, SpongeGar, takes Gary's prehistoric ancestor out for a walk, Squidward's prehistoric ancestor, Squog, complains to him, only to slip on the snail's slime trail before sliding into a rock, awakening Patrick's prehistoric ancestor, Patar. As SpongeGar and Patar start to play by blowing a bubble with a hollow log, the two and Squog discover fire emanating from a thunderstorm that has burned the log. When they experiment with it, they end up burning up in the process, but SpongeGar realizes that they can cook food with the fire.

It turns out that Squidward received a new pet snail and named her Snellie (remember that he also has a pet in "Band Geeks"), so SpongeBob and Gary challenge them to a race before finding that Patrick has a pet snail which is actually a rock, but just when the race has begun, Gary ends up getting exhausted after moving quickly, crashes into a wall, and almost succeeds in winning against one of his neighbors' pet snail...but has Snellie won? No! Guess who...

In order to live during the middle of his lifespan, Mr. Krabs takes SpongeBob and Patrick on a big night out in Bikini Bottom. But Krabs discovers that bizarre stuff has happened in various locations and he learns about a promise to take back the cancelation of the night if successful.

After trying to sell a Krabby Patty full of mold that SpongeBob has come across known as the Foggy Patty, Mr. Krabs is admitted to the Bikini Bottom Hospital. There, he meets the Flying Dutchman, who sentences him to Davy Jones' locker for his cheap actions.

SpongeBob breaks his behind in a sandboarding accident, requiring it to be glued and bandaged for the time being. His resulting treatment makes him a more lucky patient, and he befriends a chipped potato named Chip, a coin named Penny, and a handkerchief named Used Napkin because of it. They all like the new SpongeBob much better, but when Patrick and Sandy convince SpongeBob to go outside and he retains his new attitude with Chip, Penny, and Used Napkin inside his house, everyone starts to miss the old SpongeBob's buffoonery.

Krabby Land, a new playground, opens up its doors in Bikini Bottom next to the Krusty Krab, only to be revealed to be foul-looking with dangerous attractions. Mr. Krabs takes advantage of the playground by handing the children some paper and for a chance to meet "Krabby the Clown." Krabs' success, however, causes SpongeBob to worry about the children's criticism of him becoming Krabby's companion known as "the Krabby Patty Burglar" and leads him to consider hurting himself.

When Squidward joins SpongeBob and Patrick in camping in the front yard of the pineapple house, he attempts to demonstrate how "real camping" works. However, when Squidward plays a campfire song on his clarinet, SpongeBob and Patrick convince him that the action he has performed may attract a sea bear, and that goes for waving his flashing back and forth quickly, stomping around, eating cubed cheese, wearing a sombrero, a pair of clown shoes, and a hoop skirt in a goofy fashion, and screeching like a chimpanzee.

SpongeBob discovers he has a wish to fly with the jellyfish that might come true, and he tries a number of ways to gain flight. Feelings are hurt, though, when SpongeBob not only finds himself stuck on the ground, but is also forced to do some chores.

An outlaw known as the Tattletale Strangler keeps littering the trash that SpongeBob is picking up and is seeking to strangle whoever turns him in. However, he befriends SpongeBob and decides to become his bodyguard. Following a party that disappoints him, the Tattletale Strangler betrays SpongeBob and swears revenge, only to be sentenced to jail.

When SpongeBob and Patrick purchase a can of Invisible Spray at the Palace of Pranks, they argue on what to use it for, and the former inadvertently turn their clothes invisible in an attempt to take it from the latter, leading them turning each other invisible. After several bad puns, the can becomes empty, so the two set off to haunt every denizen of Bikini Bottom, only to be stopped by Mr. Krabs, who is the final denizen that they attempt to scare away.
